Meet the project members:

Dr Sandar Tin Tin (Principal Investigator) is a Senior Research Fellow in Cancer Epidemiology in the School of Population Health, the University of Auckland. She is a medical doctor with experience in epidemiological research, and has been involved in a number of research projects relating to breast cancer, lung cancer, nutrition, physical activity and injury. She was the principal investigator of the Taupo Bicycle Study funded by a HRC project grant, and is currently undertaking her postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Auckland Medical Research Foundation and Perpetual Guardian. She has a broad interest in the theoretical, methodological and applied aspects of epidemiological research, and has worked extensively with regional breast cancer register data from Auckland and Waikato.

Dr Jinfeng Zhao (Named Investigator) is a Senior Research Fellow with extensive experience in Geographical Information Science and Health Geography. Over the last 6 years, she has applied her expertise in spatial analysis, spatial statistical analysis, interactive online mapping, and data dissemination and visualisation in the field of population health.

Professor Mark Elwood (Named Investigator) has been Professor of Cancer Epidemiology in the School of Population Health, the University of Auckland, since February 2012. He has held senior academic and service positions in Canada, England, and Australia as well as previously in New Zealand, involving the practice of epidemiology and its applications to topics including the aetiology, early diagnosis, and clinical outcomes of cancer, the prevention of birth defects, real and suspected environmental hazards, and health systems and strategies.

Dr Nina Scott (Named Investigator) is a Māori Public Health Physician at the Waikato District Health Board Māori Strategy Unit and has an appointment with the University of Auckland. She is chair of the national Māori cancer leadership group, Hei Ahuru Mowai. Her focus is on improving Māori health through improving the quality of health services. She is particularly interested in improving cancer services and has been involved in a range of Māori cancer control initiatives for breast, cervical, bowel and prostate cancer.

Associate Professor Vili Nosa (Named Investigator) is a Māori Public Health Physician at the Waikato District Health Board Māori Strategy Unit and has an appointment with the University of Auckland. She is chair of the national Māori cancer leadership group, Hei Ahuru Mowai. Her focus is on improving Māori health through improving the quality of health services. She is particularly interested in improving cancer services and has been involved in a range of Māori cancer control initiatives for breast, cervical, bowel and prostate cancer.

Associate Professor Ian Campbell (Named Investigator) is a senior breast cancer surgeon, and is chair of the National Breast Cancer Standards Implementation Group. He will advise on the clinical aspects of the project, including the quality and relevance of the data used, the likely applicability of the maps, and current clinical issues. He has directed the Waikato breast cancer registry from many years.

Associate Professor Vernon Harvey (Named Investigator) is a senior medical oncologist who is director of the Auckland breast cancer registry.

Professor Ross Lawrenson (Advisor) is senior epidemiologist, public health and primary care physician who has coordinated the integration of the breast cancer datasets, and has led many projects on breast cancer utilising these databases. He was Chair of the National Screening Advisory Committee (NSAC) and Deputy Chair of the New Zealand Guidelines Group. He is a member of the Ministry of Health’s Cancer Health Information Strategy Board.

Professor Diana Sarfati (Advisor) is the Director of the Cancer Control and Chronic Conditions (C3) Research Group, based at Wellington School of Medicine. She is a cancer epidemiologist with considerable experience in research relating to inequalities in cancer survival. She is on the National Cancer Leadership Board, and a member of a number of other national cancer-related advisory committees.
